Yorkshire Military Band &
Corps of Drums
The Yorkshire Military Band and Corps of Drums, described as one of the premier civilian military bands in the UK has Thirty Eight musicians, uniformed and given the unique opportunity to travel throughout the UK to perform at concert halls, Royal Palaces, bandstands, at community events and military reunions. Playing music from marches to musicals, films to feature music, symphonies to cinema hits and pop music to big band classics.
Based in Central Barnsley, the band has recently moved to a very large modern premises which offers all musicians the room to play and socialise and the band has the opportunity to use one of its many rooms to rehearse in.
TYMB was Formed as a military band in 2010 with a rank structure and a nod to the running of a military unit but without any military commitment or training requirements.
TYMB has amongst its number Civil servants, a Magistrate, a Deputy Lord Lieutenant and Honorary Colonel, a number of primary and secondary school teachers, engineers, IT technicians, a paramedic, retired policeman, several former Army musicians to name but a few. Many of these are also skilled musicians who offer teaching of both instruments and theory of music and give up their time freely and willingly.
The band performs as a concert band and also as a marching band. The key event for marching bands is Beating Retreat and TYMB has been delighted to have performed this at many prestigious locations.
The band is also capable of splitting down into several ensembles. This includes a Big Band, dance and dixie band, fanfare team, palm court trio and Brass and Woodwind quintets.
Alongside the band, the Corps of Drums plays at every engagement that the band attends. The Corps also presents itself as a single unit where required or a lone bugler.
